Introducing the Library 2.0 Gang
At the end of January, Talis invited a number of those active in the discussion around Library 2.0 to join us on the telephone for the first in a series of conversations intended to probe this emerging space.
Participants were drawn from Europe and North America, and included both the originator of the term and several proponents, as well as more critical voices suggesting that the term itself is possibly obscuring underlying trends.
In this 50 minute edited version of the conversation, we explore what 'Library 2.0' means, and look at some of the changes that this phrase has attempted to capture.
In future meetings of the Gang, they and invited guests will continue to explore the evolving library space, and offer their commentary upon issues of the day. These conversations will be made available here.

At Talis, we were quick to see the value of Michael Casey's 'Library 2.0' as a convenient label capturing the essence of much that we are trying to do in moving forward.
In the few short months since it appeared, the term has also been settled upon by many others. Some of these see it as a rallying cry in moving library services in a new and increasingly user-focussed direction. Others suggest that the claims made for Library 2.0 by its proponents are, in fact, nothing new, and that it's all just 'librarianship'. A small minority appear to worry that Library 2.0 takes the sector in unwelcome directions.
Whichever of these viewpoints is closest to your own, the appearance of the term would certainly appear to have reinvigorated discussion of the ways in which we might wish library services to portray themselves in an increasingly complex and pervasive online environment, and that must surely be no bad thing.
Participants in this first outing of the Library 2.0 Gang were;
- Thomas Brevik, librarian at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in Bergen, Norway. Thomas blogs in English at Librarian 1.5, and in Norwegian at Blogg og bibliotek. He also podcasts, mainly in Norwegian, at Bibliotek 2.0.
- Michael Casey, Branch Manager of the Dacula Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library in Georgia, USA. Michael is credited with originating the term, Library 2.0, and blogs at LibraryCrunch.
- Ken Chad, Executive Director of Talis. Ken contributes to the panlibus blog.
- Paul Miller, Technology Evangelist at Talis. Paul contributes to the panlibus blog, and hosts the Talking with Talis podcast series.
- T. Scott Plutchak, Director of the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Alabama, USA. Scott blogs at T. Scott and, as the self-confessed d'Artagnan of the group, brings a healthy set of checks and balances to the discussion.
- Michael Stephens, Special Projects Librarian at the St. Joseph County Public Library in South Bend, Indiana, USA. Michael blogs at Tame the Web.
- Richard Wallis, Technical Development Manager at Talis. Richard contributes to the panlibus blog.
